Anxiety is not simply “over‑thinking”. It results from the combined effects of the brain, the body, psychology and circumstances. It can be broken down into three dimensions: physiological, psychological and real‑life stress.
Physiological Factors
Innate protective mechanism
Anxiety is humanity’s primitive alarm system. When facing danger or uncertainty, the brain’s amygdala automatically triggers an alert, releasing adrenaline and cortisol. This makes us tense and palpitating, warning us to watch out for risks. Mild anxiety is normal; it helps us prepare ahead. It becomes pathological anxiety only when this alarm cannot be turned off.
Physical and hormonal influences
Lack of sleep, staying up late, insufficient vital energy and blood, and endocrine fluctuations can directly lower emotional tolerance. Even small matters may easily cause irritability and anxiety.
Inborn predisposition
Some people are born with a more sensitive nervous system and tend to amplify feelings of worry.
Psychological Thinking Patterns (Most Common)
Excessive worry about the unknown
When confronted with events with uncertain outcomes (examinations, going abroad, romantic relationships, the future), the mind keeps imagining worst‑case scenarios and repeatedly ruminates on catastrophic possibilities.
Perfectionism
Fear of making mistakes or failing, setting high standards for oneself. Inner tension arises whenever things are less than perfect.
Buried past experience
Past setbacks, criticism and stressful events get stored in the subconscious. Anxiety gets triggered later by similar situations — this is what psychology refers to as trauma responses.
III. External Real‑world Stress
Financial burdens, interpersonal conflicts, work or study demands, and life transitions. When practical problems remain unresolved, mounting pressure manifests physically in the form of anxiety.
Distinguishing Normal Anxiety From Red‑flag Anxiety
✅ Normal anxiety: Anxiety arises in response to events and fades gradually afterwards. It does not disrupt eating, sleeping or daily life.
⚠️ Requiring professional attention: Persistent palpitations, insomnia, recurring panic, chest tightness or trembling without obvious triggers. If these symptoms last a long time without relief, seek professional mental‑health support.
From the Perspective of Traditional Chinese Medicine
In TCM, anxiety is mostly linked to the liver‑gallbladder, heart and kidney:
-
‑ 肝胆气郁:思虑多、容易心烦、爱叹气;
‑ Liver‑gallbladder qi stagnation: Over‑thinking, restlessness and frequent sighing.
-
‑ 心脾两虚:想事情停不下来、容易疲惫、多梦;
‑ Heart‑spleen deficiency: Racing thoughts, easy fatigue and vivid, frequent dreams.
-
‑ Malnourished heart‑spirit: Constant feelings of fear and unease.
