Everything which happens to you happens according to the nature of the universe. Do not grow angry over what has already occurred; it cares nothing for your anger. The only thing within your control is your own thoughts. Other people’s words and deeds cannot harm you. It is your judgment of the event that brings suffering. Practice letting go of prejudice and accepting impermanence, and your inner self may find peace.

(梭罗《瓦尔登湖》) Fear itself often drains us far more than the thing we fear. More often than not, it is not the real face of suffering that torments us, but the worst outcomes we repeatedly imagine in our minds. We picture pain, separation and failure in advance, and become exhausted long before these things arrive. Courage does not mean being free of fear; it means moving forward and doing what should be done, even with unease in your heart. Leave the unknown to time, and we only need to make preparations within our power for now.

(罗曼·罗兰《约翰·克利斯朵夫》) Responsibility and longing are not inherently opposed to each other. It is not contradictory at all for a person to carry caring for family in his heart while still holding the desire for distant places. You need not feel guilty for your inner hopes, nor can you ignore the burdens you ought to bear. Maturity means learning to strike a balance between the two: doing your best to settle those beside you, without completely extinguishing the little light inside yourself. No one can live without regret, and all we can do is accept the consequences calmly once we make a choice.

(伏尔泰《老实人》) Do not judge your whole life as gloomy just because of a temporary hardship. Fate sets low valleys for human beings, yet a valley is never the finish line. The weariness, fear and dilemma you bear at this moment will slowly settle into your strength as years go by. No one can sail smoothly forever, and those moments you survive will quietly broaden the boundary of your soul. Life will not always treat anyone kindly, but neither will it trap a person forever in one place.

(毛姆《刀锋》) We are always looking forward to distant things, yet overlook the present moment flowing beneath our feet. Most of our troubles in life come from tormenting ourselves with a future that has not yet arrived, or dredging up the past that has long sunk. Time will not stop and wait for us to get ready; it only moves forward quietly, whether we rejoice or grieve. True wisdom does not lie in foreseeing the ending, but in the ability to abide in the present, to receive every ordinary dawn and dusk earnestly. We need not force everything to be perfect, for accepting regret itself is an important lesson of being alive.

Habits carry quiet, gradual power. Who we are right now is shaped by countless tiny habits accumulated over time. A good habit brings barely noticeable change each day, yet after years it can reshape a person completely. Bad habits work the same way, eroding energy and state little by little until the damage becomes hard to reverse. The dividing line in life often hides within the daily choices and habits unseen by others.

True confidence does not mean thinking you are good at everything all the time. It means acknowledging your weaknesses and limits openly while still recognizing your own worth. Conceit means being blind to flaws, inferiority means fixating only on flaws, and confidence means seeing the whole of yourself and accepting strengths and weaknesses together. You do not need to be perfect to deserve respect and affection. Allowing yourself to have things you are bad at, yet still daring to move forward, is what confidence truly looks like.

Turning points often hide within crises. Yet when trapped in hardship, fear easily clouds our eyes and keeps us from seeing another way out. Hardships narrow our options and force us to break old habits and rethink solutions. Many people’s transformative growth begins with a crisis that once seemed hopeless. Do not fall into total despair at the first setback. When one door closes, fate often opens another quietly.

Do not measure other people’s happiness by your own standards. What you see as grievance may be a choice someone makes willingly. The life you find dull may be the stability they have long wished for. Happiness takes countless forms, and there is no single template. Some love bustle and noise, while others prefer quiet solitude. Respecting how others choose their happiness and refraining from casual judgment is a refined form of self-cultivation.

Passion can fight the dullness of long years. We have to do countless things we must do in life, and many days are plain and repetitive. Without a passion in the heart, life easily grows dull and barren. Passion does not need to become your career. It can simply be something you turn to in spare time, a shelter from exhausting daily life. As long as there is one thing that makes you lose track of time and devote yourself sincerely, you hold a secret weapon against mediocrity.
